"The Commandant's Own" The United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps

READING BUCCANEERS DRUM & BUGLE CORPS
Reading, Pennsylvania

“The joy is in the doing and the pleasure of pursuing is the prize.” Anonymous

The Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps proudly presents its 2008 program, THE PURSUIT OF JOY.  This year’s production is simply a celebration of drum corps and all the things that make it special – power, melody, color, speed, emotion and the sheer joy of entertaining.  We also celebrate the accomplishments of our members, who are dedicated to excellence and performance and pursue both with incredible passion.

The pursuit begins with the beauty and lyricism of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D, featuring the warm sounds of the hornline and the grace of the color guard.  The tranquility of the Canon is shattered by David Holsinger’s Abram’s Pursuit.  This piece has something for every drum corps fan – speed, power, aggression, volume and lots of great musicianship.  We next explore the essence of emotion in drum corps with a rich and moving take on Giacomo Puccini’s classic aria, Nessun Dorma.  The pursuit concludes with selections from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, including the timeless strains of “Ode to Joy.  Look for some great solo work and a spirited percussion feature as every section of the corps shines in a build-up to a rousing, triumphant and emotional conclusion that will leave you wanting more.  Enjoy the show!

Exceptional leadership is provided by drum major Josh Decker and assistant drum majors Chuck Jacobs and Charlie DiCarne.

CONNECTICUT HURRICANES

Seymour, Connecticut

While representing the Lower Naugatuck Valley for virtually their entire history, the Hurricanes, in 2008, are entering their 54th consecutive year of field competition.  Over their history the corps has been a finalist in all but 3 DCA championships, finishing in the 7th position in 2007, as well as having won every major show and championship the all age corps circuit has to offer as well as the American Legion National Championship and the Canadian World Open.

After many successes in their first 53 years, the Hurricanes continue to make a major investment in their organization as well as the musical education of the youth of the Naugatuck Valley to ensure the future success of the corps. To do this the organization this past year has iniatiated a teen collaborative musical program for middle and high school students wishing to learn to play a musical instrument. This is a free program offered to the youth of the valley area.

This year the corps is presenting The Journey West, a show that the members, fans and judges are all sure to enjoy. The selections chosen for this year include Billy the Kid by Aaron Copland, Shenendoah/They Call the Wind Mariah, Hoe-Down from Copland's Rodeo and of course The Magnificent Seven.

The Show Coordinator for 2008 is Jim Dugan. Designers are Brass-Dave Dion, Percussion-Kevin Murphy and Tim Holcomb, Visual-Jamey Thompson and Visual Ensemble-Philip Triani.

Caption Heads are Brass-Dave Dion and Jeff Mitchell, Percussion-Kevin Murphy, Visual-Jim Zulick and Guard-Philip Triani.

The corps is being led on the field by Drum Major Kate Socha assisted by Valerie Tarby and Honor Guard Captain-Rich Tardie assisted by Joe Stefon.

Executive Director and COO is Bernie Malesky. Personnel Director is Maureen Tardie and the Chairman of the Board is Tom Gabianelli. President of the corps is Kevin Hassan.

Come along and join the Hurricanes as they begin in the east and end in the west in their journey.

Bushwackers

The Bushwackers from Harrison NJ first competed in DCA in 1982.  Within four short years they defined their own new era in Drum Corps and went on to capture 6 DCA Championships.  They set the standard in excellence for over two decades and are challenging again for the coveted DCA Championship title.  Led by Corps Director, Jay Morlot, assisted by Bob Kidd, the 2008 Bushwackers present their program “Gypsodic!” where the new world will take on the old world of Gypsy Music. "Gypsodic!" will feature intense rhythms and modes, powerful harmonies and a huge dose of pure entertaining energy.

The 2008 Hawthorne Caballeros
Present “Sketches of Spain””

Over the past 62 years, the Hawthorne Caballeros have earned more titles than any other All Age Drum & Bugle Corps. This includes 9 World Championships, 16 National Championships, over 50 State Championships and hundreds of regional and local championships.

For the 2008 season, the 2006 “Peoples Choice” Caballeros present “Sketches of Spain”. The Caballeros present a program that glorifies the source of their Latin heritage.

The show will begin with the music of Alfred Reed and a first for the Hawthorne Caballeros with an arrangement of El Camino Real.  This will be followed with selections written by Chick Corea, one of the most prolific composers of the second half of the 20th Century.  The Caballeros will perform Corea's Spanish Fantasy and My Spanish Heart.  The show will end with Malaguena, written by Ernesto Lecuonia, composer and performer and perhaps the greatest and most legendary Cuban musician of his time.

Dennis Argul’s brass productions along with Gary Gill’s percussion and Adam Soloman sideline ensemble arrangements provide a perfect blend for Eric Robertshaw’s visual mastery and A. J. Kise’s auxiliary prowess to produce a show that will continue the crowd pleasing Caballero legacy. They are supported by field and technical staffs that were carefully chosen to meet the high demand of the program. Dennis Delucia is Show Advisor and Gary Gill is the Staff Coordinator.

The corps is lead onto the field by Drum Major Doug Ferraro assisted by Mike Schmitt. Color guard Co-Captains are Amy Eisenberg and Frank Salati. Tom Wilbur is the Honor Guard Captain. Mike Ferreira is Brass Captain and  Michael Hillegas is Percussion Captain.

The corps Director Emeritus is James J. Costello Jr. Lou Storck is Director of Operations. Alan Katz is Business Manager assisted by Rich Warga. Mike Ryan is Recruitment and Personnel Director. 2008 Show: "Simple Gifts"
           Appalachian Morning
           Inferno
Down to the River to Pray
                     Shenandoah
                     Simple Gifts

2008 Program Notes:
The Atlanta CorpsVets Drum and Bugle Corps’ 2008 production explores the simple
pleasures and gifts found in and throughout a day in Appalachia.

Tree covered mountains and valleys cut deep by streams, crisp morning air, sparkling sunrises, and soothing sunsets; these are the images of Appalachia evoked by the selections: Appalachian Morning and Shenandoah.

Once the western barrier of a young United States the Appalachian Mountains are home to the descendents of Scottish, Irish, German, and English immigrants. Geographically isolated until the 20th century, the people of Appalachia have preserved the culture of their ancestors including self sufficiency, religious faith and a tradition of story-telling, through music and verse such as Down to the River to Pray from the motion picture O’Brother Where Art Thou.

Living in the harsh beauty of this region the people of Appalachia have learned to
appreciate the simple things of life: hard work, a well made quilt and the company of family and friends. The Inferno by Robert Smith provides a perfect allegory for their"hellish" life in the region, particularly that of the prime industry, coal mining. While the folk music reflects the simple things of the Appalachian people as brought home by the Shaker song Simple Gifts.

The Atlanta CorpsVets invite you to join us in celebrating the Appalachians and her people with our 2008 production, “Simple Gifts”.
